The new truth behind social media is social media ambassadors.
Do you have them?
What is a social media ambassador? A good social media ambassador is someone who is part of your target market and is more active than an average person in staying connected with their smart phone through social media applications. A well connected social media ambassador should have more than 300 friends on Facebook, or a long history of reviews on Yelp or Trip Advisor, or long reigns of mayorship in Foursquare. Hopefully, these social media apps sound familiar, especially if you are behind a destination. Destination marketing organizations know how viral a review can be and how powerful bloggers have become. Smart destination marketing organizations have a solution, no longer a secret... social media endorsements.
Here's how it works: (the secret)
A third party (us /ad agency) seeks appropriate social media ambassador based on the above criteria for their clients. They set up a confidential contract where the social media ambassador agrees to a complimentary experience of the destination and in return they post positive comments and pictures about the destination. If a social media ambassador ends up with a negative experience, they agree to not post and inform the third party, so they can correct or be made aware of the ill experience.
This is the new truth behind social media and it's working for destinations, social media ambassadors and the overall consumers.
